FIELD NOTES
Bounded, Not Exhaustive: Writing a SOC 2 System Description That Survives Audit

A blank SOC 2 system description is daunting for the wrong reason. Most teams treat it like an exhaustive technical encyclopedia. It's actually a bounded, honest narrative of how your platform delivers on its commitments. Nothing more.
3 MIN READ
During a recent sprint building out a SOC 2 System Description for a client’s team, a familiar pattern emerged. Without clear boundaries, the document either balloons into an unwieldy mess or glosses over critical operational controls.
What Belongs (and What to Cut)
Auditors don't want fluff. They want clear architecture, defined boundaries, and accurate controls.

Divide the Work, Then Centralize the Review
Writing this end-to-end in a vacuum is a fast track to burnout. The most practical approach is chunking the document out across the client's internal team. Hand the cloud infrastructure and pipeline sections to Lead Engineers, identity and onboarding to IT/HR, and data handling policies to Product owners. They live in the day-to-day details and can supply the ground truth quickly.
The real danger comes during assembly.
When you crowdsource a compliance document, contradictions inevitably creep in. Engineering might write that all customer data is wiped instantly upon account termination, while Ops notes that encrypted database backups are retained for 90 days.
This is why having your CISO or fractional security lead run the final pass is non-negotiable. Someone with visibility across every section needs to sit above the individual pieces, catch the discrepancies, reconcile edge cases, and stitch the contributions into a unified narrative.
Get the ground truth from the team living it. Get a story that survives the audit room from the person who has to defend it.
If you haven't identified who that second person is yet, that's worth settling before the audit clock starts. I wrote about the fractional-vs-full-time tradeoff here: When to Bring in a Fractional CTO or CISO (vs. Full-Time).
If you're heading into SOC 2 prep without that person named, get in touch.
